Shared Trailer Space When You Do Not Need a Full Truck
LTL (less-than-truckload) is for palletized freight that is too large for parcel and too small to fill a trailer. Your pallets are loaded with other shippers’ freight, moved through terminals, and delivered to a dock or stated site.
The quote uses origin, destination, weight, pallet count, freight class or commodity, and accessorials such as liftgate or inside delivery. Transit days are business days on that lane when freight is tendered on the booked pickup date.
Use LTL for wholesale replenishment, store fixtures, and machinery that ships on pallets. If you need the trailer sealed for one consignee only, book Full Truckload. If the goods must stay at a set temperature, book Cold Chain.

Have pallets labeled and ready at dock hours. Keep the PRO number for tracking and claims.
When LTL Freight Is the Right Service
Book LTL when
- Goods are palletized and exceed parcel size or weight.
- The load will not fill a 53-foot trailer.
- Pickup and delivery can use a commercial dock or a booked accessorial.
Choose another service when
- You need a dedicated trailer — use Full Truckload.
- Inventory must be stored and shipped later — use Warehousing and Fulfillment.
- The product needs a stated temperature — use Cold Chain.
Pallets, Weight, and Dock Hours
LTL quotes assume standard pallets unless you declare oversize, stack restrictions, or limited access.
- Typical handling
- 48×40 in pallets, stretch-wrapped and labeled on two sides. Unstable or overhanging freight must be declared.
- Weight
- Quoted per hundredweight. Floor-loaded cartons without pallets may be refused or reclassed.
- Pickup
- Commercial dock hours unless liftgate or limited-access is on the bill. Residential delivery is an accessorial.
- Claims
- Note exceptions on the delivery receipt. Concealed damage must be reported within the window on your contract.
